Firm’s upgrade pledge after sale of Cumbria holiday park

A family-run holiday park in Cumbria has been bought by one of the UK’s biggest operators.

Wyldecrest Parks, which has its headquarters in Essex, has added Port Haverigg Marina Village to its growing portfolio and pledged to upgrade the attraction.

Former owner, Steve Attwood, has sold the business for an undisclosed sum, which has been described by Wyldecrest as “significant”.

Mr Attwood, 64, did not wish to comment further at this stage, but said he was “basically retiring”.

He sold Butterflowers Holiday Park, Haverigg, around a year ago.

Port Haverigg is home to more than 200 holiday homes, caravans, lodges, and a 200-acre freshwater lake with fishing and watersports.

James Kenneth, Wyldecrest PR and marketing manager, said the firm had 41 parks and was “probably the second largest park owner and lodge provider in the UK”.

He said: “It’s a beautiful setting. Cumbria is stunning; the Lake District is beautiful and this was a great opportunity to buy into a fantastic holiday park.

“It doesn’t need a huge amount of work, but we’ve gone through a whole catalogue of things that need doing in terms of maintenance, improving things and that’s going to be rolled out within the next 18 months.”

Haverigg Councillor Doug Wilson paid tribute to the work Mr Attwood has done for south Copeland.

He said: “Steve is a character and a guy who had a vision and enthusiasm. He’s made it an excellent attraction, particularly with the way he tried to develop the water sports aspect of the lagoon.”

Mr Kenneth added: “It’s a fantastic location and something we thought we could enhance and bring back to its former glory. We are going to put new homes on, new caravans on, new lodges on, and attract more people to the park, and more visitors as well.

“We’ve gone in, we’ve made the assessment of what needs to be done. It can’t be done overnight; it’s a large park, lots of homes on there. We want to tackle all of these things and hopefully we will be getting round to it sooner rather than later. Our aim is to improve the whole facility.”
